LOS ANGELES, Calif. — id Software announced Thursday that its highly anticipated prequel, Doom: The Dark Ages, will launch on May 15, 2025. The game, revealed during a showcase event, offers a medieval fantasy twist on the iconic first-person shooter franchise, complete with brutal melee combat and massive-scale battles.

Set long before the events of previous Doom games, The Dark Ages transports players to a medieval realm where the Doomslayer wields weapons like spiked maces and iron flails. The game introduces new gameplay elements, including a cybernetic dragon mount and a skyscraper-sized mech suit for battling kaiju-sized enemies.

“We wanted to explore a different era while staying true to the core of Doom,” said a spokesperson for id Software. “The medieval setting allowed us to innovate with melee combat and create a world that feels both fresh and familiar.”

The game also emphasizes accessibility, featuring customizable gameplay sliders that let players adjust elements like game speed and parry timing. These options aim to make the experience more approachable for newcomers while offering additional challenges for veterans.

Doom: The Dark Ages will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders are expected to open in the coming weeks.
