Derrick Wood Dumfries State Of The Town

DUMFRIES, Va. – Mayor Derrick R. Wood delivered an inspiring vision for Dumfries during the annual State of the Town Address on June 5, 2025. Speaking from the John Wilmer Porter Municipal Building, Wood highlighted significant milestones and ambitious plans for the town, captivating residents and local leaders in attendance.

Mayor Wood opened his address by honoring the late Congressman Gerry Connolly (D), who passed away last month. He reflected on Dumfries’ history, founded in 1749, including its struggles and revitalization, notably after the election of John Wilmer Porter, Virginia’s first African American municipal official post-Reconstruction.

“We hadn’t just lost our port — we lost our purpose,” said Wood, as he laid out the town’s progress and transformation from a former landfill to the $500 million Rose Gaming Resort. This project has generated $3 million in revenue and created approximately 500 jobs. “This is not just a cleanup — this is a comeback,” he emphasized. The second phase, including a hotel and convention center, is expected to open by 2027.

He also announced the launch of Dumfries’ first Economic Development Authority (EDA), aimed at attracting new businesses and accelerating projects, including a future waterfront district inspired by National Harbor.

In his speech, Wood noted the town’s ongoing fiscal strength, boasting a clean audit and a $7 million unassigned fund balance. Dumfries is also in the running for the prestigious Triple Crown Budget Award. The Dumfries Police Department has seen a significant drop in violent crime by 25% and is on track for full accreditation.

Wood also highlighted various community initiatives such as the establishment of the town’s first Youth Council and a wellness campaign called “Move with the Mayor.” A notable $75,000 grant was awarded to the Boys & Girls Club for kitchen upgrades and a new program to promote healthy eating.

Closing his address, Wood engaged the community saying, “This is your table. This is your town. This is your Dumfries.” He framed his remarks around the themes of “Progress, Partnerships, and Possibilities,” outlining a roadmap for continued growth.

Mayor Derrick R. Wood has served since 2018 and prioritizes investments in community services and partnerships. With a population of around 5,000, Dumfries is reclaiming its heritage and establishing its identity as a vibrant destination in Prince William County.
