Dylan O'Brien, known for his role in “Teen Wolf,” has opened up about his initial doubts in playing Dan Aykroyd in the film “Saturday Night.” In a recent interview with Men's Health, the 33-year-old actor expressed his self-consciousness about being suitable for the role, fearing that audiences would view the casting as a misfit.

“I don’t know. I was self-conscious that I didn’t look like him, that I didn’t sound like him, that I thought people wouldn’t think of me as Dan Aykroyd,” O’Brien stated in the interview published on October 7, 2024. However, he eventually adopted a more carefree attitude, deciding not to concern himself with potential criticism about physical dissimilarities.

The movie “Saturday Night,” directed by Jason Reitman, portrays the lead-up to the inaugural broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” on October 11, 1975. Reitman encouraged O’Brien to bring his unique interpretation to the role without delving into impersonation. “He really wanted everyone to have their own spin on the person,” O’Brien shared.

O’Brien noted a shared characteristic with Aykroyd’s youthful “aloofness,” which Reitman encouraged him to use for the role. “That type of aloofness amidst other people having to handle tense situations was what Jason was telling me to embrace,” he remarked.

Despite his initial insecurities, O’Brien expressed excitement about the opportunity to participate in the project. “I’m still so happy to be there and, like, whatever,” he said regarding his laid-back approach to any potential backlash. The actor also looks forward to meeting Aykroyd at the Toronto International Film Festival, where they both will see the film for the first time.

“Saturday Night” opened in select theaters and is scheduled for a wider release on October 11. Written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, the film is based on extensive interviews with former cast members, writers, and producers of the beloved TV show.
