Bald Eagles Jackie Shadow Big Bear Lake

Big Bear, California — A live YouTube feed featuring Jackie and Shadow, a pair of bald eagles, along with their two eaglets, has become a source of joy for many viewers. The feed, which has attracted over 638,000 subscribers since its launch in October 2015, highlights the daily lives of these magnificent birds and their natural behaviors.

Jackie, known for her serious demeanor and leadership, shares the nest with Shadow, who is seen as more independent. Sandy Steers, executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), notes their playful interactions, stating, “Sometimes Shadow nips at Jackie’s tail or wing ‘to get a response out of her,’ it’s hilarious.” The live stream has allowed fans to witness their adorable family moments, including the eaglets’ preparations to leave the nest.

“What draws people in is that nature is fascinating, and most of us haven’t had the chance to study it,” Steers added. Viewers have expressed their emotional connections to the eagles through heartfelt comments in the live chat. Quotes like, “Love you Jackie, Shadow, Sunny, and Gizmo, you’re in my heart forever!” reflect a growing community of eagle enthusiasts.

Over the years, Jackie went through a partner change when Mr. B, her previous mate, departed from the nest. The current eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, are eager to test their wings as they approach the time to fly. FOBBV recently confirmed that Gizmo is female based on her size and behavior, while Sunny’s sex is still being evaluated.

The eaglets, now 11 weeks old, are nearly ready to leave the nest, and viewers are anxiously waiting for their first flights. As Steers remarked, “They don’t look quite ready to me, but maybe that’s just me hoping they stay longer.” Watching them grow has provided a comforting break for many, illustrating the power of nature to uplift spirits amid chaotic times.
