East Tennessee Winter Weather School Closures

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Many schools in East Tennessee and Kentucky will remain closed on Friday, February 21, due to dangerous road conditions resulting from snow and freezing temperatures. The closures follow a snowstorm that impacted the region on February 19, and despite the snowfall subsiding, the frigid temperatures persist.

Affected school districts have decided to close their doors after a cold weather advisory was issued for the area. Wind chill factors are expected to dip into the single digits overnight, particularly in higher elevation areas like the plateau and foothills.

The National Weather Service has also warned that moisture refreezing overnight, combined with the possibility of light snow, could lead to treacherous travel conditions from Thursday night into Friday morning. “Travel could be hazardous due to black ice and reduced visibility,” a spokesperson from the weather service stated.

Local authorities are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. The weather conditions have led to several school districts taking precautionary measures, keeping students and staff safe from potential hazards.

As of now, further updates about school closures will be provided as the situation develops. Parents and guardians are urged to stay informed through school district communications.
