Elevated Fire Risk Issued for Virginia and Maryland Today

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A special weather statement has been issued for an elevated risk of fire spread across northwest Virginia, eastern West Virginia, and north-central and western Maryland from late morning through early evening today.
The National Weather Service has alerted residents that the combination of west winds gusting between 15 to 25 mph, relative humidity levels dropping to 20 to 30 percent, and drying fine fuels will create a heightened danger of rapid fire spread in these areas.
“Locally higher wind gusts are anticipated along the ridges,” the advisory stated. It cautioned the public to consult their local burn permitting authorities to determine if outdoor burning is permissible under these conditions.
Fire safety officials urge that if residents choose to burn, they must exercise extreme caution as conditions can quickly escalate. “It is crucial to manage burning practices safely to prevent unintended fires,” said Chief Mark Anderson of the Charlottesville Fire Department.
This advisory is expected to remain in effect until 7 p.m. EDT. Conditions throughout the day can lead to potential challenges in managing fires, especially in rural and forested areas.
With clear skies and temperatures around 36 degrees this morning, residents should be aware that a warming trend is forecasted. However, the dry and windy conditions are creating significant risks that overshadow the pleasant weather.
Fire authorities continue to emphasize the importance of fire safety measures, especially as warmer months approach. “Each year, we see an increase in fire incidents during dry spells; this year could be no different if residents are not cautious,” Chief Anderson added.
