Ellen DeGeneres Finalizes Move to the UK, Sells Montecito Home

MONTECITO, Calif. — Ellen DeGeneres, the former talk show host known for her extensive real estate investments, has officially sold one of her final properties in the United States. This sale comes four months after relocating to the English countryside with her wife, Portia de Rossi.
The couple listed their two-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Montecito for $4,995,000 on March 10 and sold it for $5.2 million less than two weeks later. The property went into escrow on March 20 after attracting multiple offers shortly after hitting the market. A representative for the listing described the midcentury-modern home as featuring ‘spa-like’ bathrooms, a private courtyard, a terrace, and an enclosed patio.
DeGeneres and de Rossi purchased the Montecito home in 2020 for $2.9 million. The transaction reflects a significant gain for the pair, illustrating DeGeneres’s ongoing success in the real estate market, where she has flipped numerous properties over the years.
In addition to the recent sale, the couple still faces challenges with another property on the market: a Bel-Air mansion known as The Brown House, listed for $33.9 million. Originally designed by renowned architect Richard Neutra, the home has undergone meticulous restoration and retains its mid-century charm. However, despite its unique features, the house remains unsold as of now.
The Brown House consists of five bedrooms and eight bathrooms within its 3,796 square feet, and is celebrated for its 180-degree views of Los Angeles. DeGeneres and de Rossi, who wed in 2008, originally planned to restore the home before reselling it, mirroring their previous real estate ventures.
As they transition to life in England, the couple bought a stunning farmhouse in the Cotswolds for $18 million, exceeding its asking price by $3 million. Their new home in the picturesque region of England positions them among a roster of celebrity neighbors including David and Victoria Beckham, and Kate Moss. The couple’s choice of location highlights a trend among celebrities seeking quieter living spaces outside the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.
This move marks a significant change for DeGeneres, who has become a mainstay in American entertainment and property markets. As they embrace their new life in the UK, DeGeneres recently shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, celebrating two decades together with de Rossi.
“20 years together. Happy to be with you everywhere and always,” DeGeneres wrote on Instagram. This sentiment reflects a strong bond as they embark on their new adventure.
