Emily Compagno Reflects on USO Tours and Faith During War

LOS ANGELES, CA — Emmy-winning TV host Emily Compagno shared her experiences during a recent podcast, emphasizing the importance of USO tours in uplifting troop morale. Compagno, who served as an NFL cheerleader in Iraq, recalled her first impressions of the servicemen and women she met, describing them as earnest and selfless.
“I was struck by how young they were and the reasons they joined,” Compagno said. “Some enlisted out of financial need, others out of a sense of duty or patriotism.” She added that the USO has been vital in ensuring that troops feel seen and heard during deployments.
During her time in Iraq in 2009, Compagno visited several military bases, including the Sadr City Joint Security Station, known for its danger. She recalled the surprise and excitement of the soldiers when she and her fellow cheerleaders arrived. “No celebrities ever go there, so it was a huge deal for them,” she said.
The cheerleaders unexpectedly spent an entire night with the soldiers when their Black Hawk evacuation helicopter was diverted for a medical emergency. Compagno described it as an unforgettable experience filled with laughter and camaraderie. “It felt like summer camp,” she reflected, highlighting the deep connections made in such unique circumstances.
However, the joy of her visit was soon overshadowed by tragedy when soldiers she met fell victim to an IED. She recalled that Tim Karcher, the Lieutenant Colonel she had spent time with, lost his legs in the blast. Compagno shared that such experiences reinforced for her the fragility of life and the importance of faith.
In her reflections, Compagno emphasized the need for prayer and connection to God, a sentiment echoing throughout her life. “Prayer is what saved my life multiple times,” she stated, underlining the key role faith plays for those who serve.
Compagno concluded her session by honoring the young service members and recognizing the seeking of comfort and understanding through their faith. “I hope I’ve honored their stories by sharing my own,” she added, illustrating the profound bond shared between civilians and military personnel.
