Emotional Segment on The One Show Features Children’s Stories of Loss
The BBC‘s “The One Show” made a poignant return on Wednesday, October 16, as hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp presented a moving segment focusing on children affected by loss. This episode gained particular emotional depth as it featured young participants from the Children In Need Challenge Squad who shared their personal stories of overcoming adversity.
Roman Kemp, known for his appearances on “Celebrity Gogglebox,” was visibly moved during the broadcast after meeting Tanisha, a 17-year-old from Slough. At the age of fourteen, Tanisha experienced the devastating loss of her father, Mario, who succumbed to oesophageal cancer following nine months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
The broadcast highlighted the support Tanisha and her family received from Thames Hospice, an organization funded by BBC Children in Need. Host Alex Jones expressed her empathy towards Tanisha’s mother, remarking, “It’s a huge loss to you as a family, you must be so proud of her.” Adding to the sentiment, Jones shared her own difficulty in imagining the loss of a parent, stating, “I can’t imagine that now as a forty-something!”
Roman Kemp, aged 31, also addressed broader mental health issues as part of his role in Children In Need’s mental health campaign, “The Heaviest Backpack.” This initiative draws attention to the array of challenges faced by young individuals, such as anxiety and home difficulties, which can persistently burden their everyday lives.
Kemp, the son of musician Martin Kemp and singer Shirlie Holliman, has actively advocated for mental health support, notably through an open letter on Instagram urging the government to introduce mental health counselors in all British schools. His advocacy was further fueled by the tragic loss of his producer and close friend Joe.
Wednesday’s segment of “The One Show” has resonated with viewers, spotlighting the impactful stories of the Challenge Squad and shedding light on the vital support provided by Children in Need.
