End of an Era: Iconic Place Versailles to be Demolished for Residential Development in Montreal
The iconic Place Versailles in Montreal, Quebec, is set to be demolished to make way for a residential development, marking the end of an era for this historic landmark.
Constructed in 1963, Place Versailles was the first indoor shopping center in Quebec and has since housed nearly 225 commercial spaces and over 4000 parking spots.
The shopping center was renowned for its marble decor and high ceilings that allowed ample natural light to flood the space, creating a unique ambiance.
However, with the rise of e-commerce and changing consumer behaviors, Place Versailles struggled to maintain its former glory.
The demolition of Place Versailles will be done gradually over the coming years to make room for a 17-hectare new residential neighborhood.
The newly developed area will be served by the metro’s green line and is expected to feature around 5000 housing units, a school, and a hotel.
While most buildings will range from 12 to 16 stories, some structures will reach heights of up to 25 stories, showcasing the ambitious vision of the real estate developers involved in the project.
Although specific construction plans have not been publicly disclosed yet, the project is set to be a major undertaking, considering the scale and scope of the development.
