Energy Providers Brace for Potential Power Outages Amid Severe Weather

HOUSTON, Texas — Energy providers across Southeast Texas are closely monitoring winter weather forecasts on Tuesday due to the potential for power disruptions. Severe storms and strong winds are anticipated to affect energy supply, leading to outages for thousands of customers.
According to CenterPoint Energy, which provides service to the Houston metropolitan area, new outage tracking technology has been implemented following previous storm events. The cloud-based, mobile-friendly outage tracker aims to keep customers informed about power restoration efforts. “Our goal is to provide users with real-time information during outages,” said a CenterPoint representative.
Entergy Texas and Texas New Mexico Power are also on high alert as they prepare for any unexpected service interruptions in their regions. Both companies highlighted their commitment to restoring power as swiftly and safely as possible.
In light of the anticipated weather conditions, Xcel Energy issued a notice about possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in the South Plains region. On Tuesday, approximately 180 customers in the Post, Texas area may experience temporary power interruptions to mitigate wildfire risks. Adrian Rodriguez, president of Xcel Energy in New Mexico and Texas, stated, “This is a precautionary measure as we face extreme weather conditions that pose fire hazards. We urge customers to prepare in advance.”
Customers relying on medical equipment are being contacted directly via phone to ensure they have adequate backup plans. Power outages can be particularly dangerous for those with health concerns. The notice stressed that customers should update their account information and stay tuned for real-time updates on outage statuses through the utility’s official channels.
In addition to monitoring outages, energy providers are busy conducting inspections of their infrastructure. Crews are currently patrolling power lines to assess any damage and ensure the safety of restoration efforts. Power restoration could take longer than usual due to necessary precautions that ensure crew safety.
To assist customers during outages, utilities recommend preparing an emergency kit that includes battery-powered lights, charged portable chargers, non-perishable foods, and water. Keeping refrigerators closed will help preserve food during extended outages. Power companies remind residents to report outages immediately via their websites or customer service lines.
While the grid’s reliability has improved significantly with advancements in technology like smart meters, outages can still occur due to extreme weather. As severe storms approach Texas, energy providers are prioritizing public safety while ensuring they’re ready for rapid response to any outage conditions.
