Entergy New Orleans Faces Massive Power Outage Over Memorial Day Weekend

NEW ORLEANS, La. — A significant power outage affected over 100,000 residents across the New Orleans area on May 25, 2025, due to a load-shed order issued by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). The outage began at approximately 4:50 p.m., disrupting Memorial Day activities for families throughout the city.
Entergy New Orleans officials confirmed that the outage impacted areas such as Mid-City, Lakeview, parts of Metairie, and Terrytown. Customers in nearby Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes were also affected, with more than 6,000 without power.
Many residents experienced the outage during a time when air conditioning was crucial due to the heat. One resident expressed frustration, stating, “It’s just a really bad time for anyone to be without power in the middle of Memorial Day weekend.” Entergy cited the load shed as a necessary measure to maintain the reliability of the power grid and prevent a broader outage.
During the outage, local businesses like Toups Meatery offered their facilities as cooling centers for those without power, demonstrating the community spirit of New Orleans. “We don’t want anyone in our community to suffer in any way,” one employee said.
The outage also affected the 50th celebration of Greek Fest, cutting electricity at the festival. Organizers reported difficulties in cooking food and providing relief from the heat inside the venue. A festival attendee remarked, “It’s just put a damper on things.”
By late evening, Entergy announced that the load-shed order had concluded and power restoration was underway for most affected areas. However, they noted that the estimated time for complete restoration remained unclear.
City Council officials, including President JP Morrell and Vice President Helena Moreno, called for answers regarding the outage, emphasizing the need for timely communication during such events. “We deserve clear answers regarding the reasons behind this incident,” they stated.
