Equipment Malfunction Triggers Rescue Operation at Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine
CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. (KKTV) – Emergency personnel were dispatched to the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine on Thursday afternoon following an equipment malfunction. According to the Divide Fire Department, responders were involved in a “rescue in progress” situation at the historic mine site.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department confirmed they were providing mutual aid for the incident, having been dispatched at 1:15 p.m. In total, five fire engines and a drone were employed during the operation to assist with the emergency response.
“Just a brief update regarding the incident today at the Mollie Kathleen Mine in Cripple Creek,” stated the Teller County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 2:10 p.m. “This was due to an equipment malfunction. The mine did not collapse,” they clarified to quell any concerns about structural integrity.
The Teller County Sheriff’s Office has announced plans to hold a press conference at around 4:30 p.m. to provide further details on the incident and the outcome of the rescue efforts.
At this time, it remains unclear how many individuals were involved in the rescue or if any injuries have been reported. The incident develops as the mine, known for its public tours, was set to conclude its current season on the upcoming Sunday.
