Middle East Conflict October 2024

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reported that two of its peacekeepers were injured after an Israeli tank allegedly fired at a watchtower in UNIFIL’s main base in Naqoura. According to UNIFIL, Israel “deliberately” targeted other UN peacekeeper positions, which constitutes a “grave violation of international humanitarian law.” Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the peacekeepers are not serious.

Meanwhile, a UN inquiry has accused Israel of systematically destroying Gaza’s healthcare system, potentially constituting the crime against humanity of extermination. Navi Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, released a statement ahead of a comprehensive report, alleging “relentless and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities” by Israeli forces, with children reportedly bearing the brunt of these attacks. The report criticizes Israeli forces for allegedly killing and torturing medical personnel and restricting permits for patients needing medical care outside the Gaza Strip.

In a related incident, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported that a recent airstrike on a school in Gaza, used as a shelter for displaced individuals, resulted in 28 deaths and 54 injuries. The organization, serving as Palestine’s branch of the International Red Cross, highlighted the mounting casualties of the ongoing conflict.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati disclosed ongoing diplomatic efforts by the United States and France to revive ceasefire negotiations in the Middle East. Speaking to Reuters, Mikati stated that both nations aim to establish a ceasefire to facilitate political dialogue. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has shown support for a ceasefire but continues to oppose the terms concerning Gaza.

The conflict has further intensified with Israeli strikes on the southern Lebanese town of Derdghaiya, killing five health workers, as confirmed by Lebanese authorities. The BBC reported this brings the total number of healthcare worker casualties since Israel’s military operations began on October 7 to 115. Additional attacks on makeshift emergency response centers in the town have caused extensive damage.

The United States has called on Israel to urgently address the “catastrophic conditions” in Gaza. Addressing the UN Security Council, the US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed the need to alleviate suffering and emphasized that there should be “no demographic or territorial change” in Gaza. Recent Israeli military actions in northern Gaza purport to target Hamas regrouping efforts.

In diplomatic interactions, US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a pivotal phone conversation, their first since August, discussing Israel’s potential response to Iran’s missile strike. Biden’s administration remains cautious about the possibility of a US-Iranian conflict being ignited.

Amidst these developments, top Israeli officials advocate for military action against Iran, targeting its nuclear facilities. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett emphasized this as a tactical opportunity to debilitate Iran’s capabilities. However, President Biden has dismissed these suggestions, fearing an undesired escalation with Iran, which might propel the Middle East towards greater instability.
