Escaped Inmate Derrick Groves Cornered by Police in Atlanta

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Derrick Groves, a 31-year-old inmate, has been cornered by police in Atlanta, according to FOX News. Groves escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on May 16, 2025, along with nine other inmates. This incident has since become one of Louisiana’s most high-profile jail breaks in decades.
While most of the escapees were caught within weeks, Groves has evaded authorities for nearly five months. He was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder after he was convicted in 2024 for opening fire at a Mardi Gras block party, killing two people and injuring several others. The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office labeled him a ‘cold-blooded killer’ due to his history of violent crime.
Investigators believe that Groves received assistance from outside accomplices, including his girlfriend and former jail employee, Darriana Burton. Burton has been arrested and charged with helping him escape.
Currently, Groves is involved in a standoff with Atlanta police. Law enforcement has confirmed a heavy police presence at the scene, but specific details surrounding his capture remain limited. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals have not yet issued official statements regarding the ongoing situation.
As this is a developing story, updates will be provided as more information is confirmed.
