Evacuations Ordered as Rattlesnake Branch Fire Intensifies in Swain County

SWAIN COUNTY, N.C. — Evacuation orders are now in effect across Swain County due to the Rattlesnake Branch wildfire, which ignited on April 18. The Swain County Emergency Management announced the immediate need for residents in Big Rocky’s Road and the Sky Cove Development to evacuate.
Officials emphasized the urgency in a Facebook post: “All residents must evacuate NOW due to safety concerns.” As of April 18, the fire, which is primarily consuming the areas of Sam Davis Road, Gospel Road, Big Rocky’s Road, and Dark Branch Road, has affected approximately 90 acres.
The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) has since taken charge of managing the Sam Davis Road Fire. Fire crews are currently working to establish control lines, employing air support and heavy equipment as part of their efforts. The situation remains dynamic, with heavy smoke affecting not only Swain County but also nearby regions.
Residents have been warned to expect variable smoke conditions based on wind patterns, and officials urge caution while driving and limited outdoor activities, especially for individuals sensitive to smoke. The emergency management team has specifically requested the public not to call 911 to report smoke from the ongoing fire, emphasizing that they should only dial for visible flames or dangerous conditions to maintain clear emergency lines.
Access to fire-affected areas is strictly regulated, with non-resident traffic being turned around to provide unimpeded access for firefighting crews and emergency vehicles. A shelter has been established at the Swain County Senior Center, located at 125 Brendle St., Bryson City, N.C., for residents displaced by the fire. However, pet owners should note that pets are not permitted at the shelter.
As the situation evolves, News 13 will continue to provide updates. Residents are encouraged to monitor local news sources for the latest information on the Rattlesnake Branch wildfire.
