Exhibit Celebrating Andrew Young Opens Amid Black History Month

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Lawrenceville Arts Center is hosting a new exhibit honoring the life and legacy of Ambassador Andrew Young, one of the foremost figures in the American civil rights movement, as part of Black History Month celebrations. Titled The Many Lives of Andrew Young, the exhibit explores his significant contributions to politics, diplomacy, and social justice.

Andrew Young made history in 1977 as the first African American U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Later, he served as a U.S. congressman and the mayor of Atlanta, where he championed civil rights and economic development throughout his career. “Ambassador Young has shaped the landscape of modern America,” said Lawrenceville Arts Center Director, Jane Doe. “This exhibit is both a celebration of his legacy and a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality.”

Running through March 31, the exhibit provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the enduring influence of Young, whose lifelong commitment to equity and justice continues to inspire new generations. The City of Lawrenceville and Aurora Theatre recently hosted a special event featuring a fireside chat with Andrew Young himself, where he reflected on his impact on the civil rights movement.

In his remarks, Young stated, “Every generation has its challenges, but I remain hopeful. The spirit of resilience and activism lives on in our youth.” The exhibit showcases a wealth of artifacts, including photographs, documents, and personal artifacts that trace Young’s remarkable journey.

Visitors to the exhibit will gain insight into Young’s role in pivotal moments in U.S. history, including his involvement in organizing the 1963 Birmingham campaign alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his efforts in the 1980s to end apartheid in South Africa.
