Exploring Steve McNair’s Life and Tragic Death
The new Netflix documentary, “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair,” sheds light on the life and tragic death of former NFL superstar Steve McNair. He was a beloved quarterback known for his outstanding playing years before his shocking murder in 2009 at the age of 36.
In this revealing film, filmmakers Rodney Lucas and Taylor Ward revisit the events leading up to McNair’s heartbreaking death on July 4, where he was found alongside his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi. Their deaths were ruled a murder-suicide by Kazemi, who shot McNair and then herself.
One of the startling details that emerge is the delay in reporting the discovery of the bodies. Wayne Neely, a friend of McNair’s, found them but initially called Robert Gaddy, a longtime friend of McNair, instead of the police, claiming he was too shocked.
The documentary reveals tensions in the friendship between McNair and Gaddy, sparked by business disagreements over a restaurant venture. Gaddy expressed regret, believing that if their relationship hadn’t been strained, he might have been there to help McNair that night.
Sahel Kazemi also had her own struggles. In interviews, her ex-boyfriend Keith Norfleet speaks about feeling jealous when he learned she was dating McNair, who had been his favorite football player. Kazemi faced her own battles, including financial stress, and friends noted she had spoken about feeling suicidal just days before the tragedy.
The film includes emotional moments as former Titans coach Jeff Fisher shares his memories of McNair, especially recalling the bittersweet end to the Super Bowl where McNair led the team, only to come up short. Fisher highlights their strong bond, stating he told McNair he loved him during one of their last conversations.
A darker narrative unfolds as Vincent Hill, a private investigator, calls for a closer look at Adrian Gilliam, the individual who owned the gun used in the murders. There are lingering questions about Gilliam’s relationship with Kazemi, raising speculation about other possible motives behind the tragedy.
