Family of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Crosses U.S. Border Amid Investigations

San Diego, California – A group of 17 relatives of Mexican drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo‘ Guzmán, including his ex-wife Griselda López Pérez, crossed the US-Mexico border at San Ysidro on May 9, 2025.
According to journalist Luis Chaparro and reports from El Universal, the family was met by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Marshals as they entered the U.S. They arrived on foot, each carrying at least two suitcases and collectively possessing around $70,000 in cash.
López, who is the mother of Ovidio Guzmán, and has been implicated in drug trafficking and evading authorities, is known for her connection to the Sinaloa Cartel. Her son, Ovidio, was extradited in September 2023, while his brother Joaquín Guzmán López voluntarily surrendered in July 2024. Both are facing drug trafficking charges and are reportedly in talks for plea agreements with U.S. authorities.
The Mexican government has not released additional information on the situation. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that U.S. authorities should provide updates regarding the potential detentions of the family members.
This development highlights ongoing cooperation negotiations between Guzmán’s sons and U.S. law enforcement, as they navigate the legal implications of their family’s legacy.
