Family Creates Scholarship at Old Dominion University in Memory of Son
In a touching tribute to their late son, retired U.S. Navy Captain John A. Carbone and Mary Lois Carbone have established the John Anthony Carbone Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Old Dominion University’s Educational Foundation.
John Carbone Jr., fondly known as JJ, passed away in May 2023 at the age of 59. The Carbones have pledged $50,000 towards this scholarship dedicated to supporting future educators specializing in special education.
John Jr. faced challenges from birth that led to health issues throughout his life. Despite this, he worked various jobs, was celebrated for his philanthropic efforts, and had a strong desire to support others.
The Carbone family, with no prior connection to ODU, aims to make a difference by aiding students with special needs through this scholarship.
Dean Tammi Dice of ODU’s Darden College expressed gratitude, stating that the scholarship aligns with the college’s values of inclusivity and accessibility.
A committee at the Darden College will select recipients based on faculty nominations. Eligible students must be full-time sophomores or juniors with a GPA of 3.0, residents of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, or Norfolk, and demonstrate financial need.
