Family of MTA Bus Victim Speaks Out Amid Investigation

BALTIMORE, MD — The family of a 36-year-old man who died after falling under a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus is speaking out as police conduct their investigation into the incident. Baltimore City police reported the accident occurred on Tuesday, March 12, 2025, around 2:40 p.m. in the 100 block of West Fayette Street in downtown Baltimore.
Ekon Okudo, a Baltimore resident, was pronounced dead at the hospital following the incident. ‘When I found out, I didn’t really believe it, but then I had to believe it. We found out that he got hit by a bus and killed,’ said Fulton Miles, Okudo’s father. ‘I talked to him Tuesday afternoon, and then almost an hour and a half later, he was dead.’
According to his family, Okudo had called Baltimore home for the last four years. He was a graduate of Wayne State University, where he majored in biology and chemistry. Initially aspiring to become a doctor, Okudo later shifted his focus to law. ‘So, he had his head screwed on right and was trying to do the right thing. I believe he would’ve helped a lot of people, which he was already starting to do,’ said Miles.
Okudo also served six years in the Army National Guard, a commitment his father proudly recalled. ‘When he came out of the Army, I used to tease him. I said, ‘Man, what’s wrong with you?’ He said, ‘God, country, family, self,’ and I said, ‘OK.’ He said, ‘Hoorah.’
Prior to his death, Okudo worked for Second Chance, a nonprofit organization in Baltimore committed to helping individuals re-enter the workforce. A spokesperson for Second Chance released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Okudo’s passing. ‘On behalf of everyone here at Second Chance — Ekon’s passing is a shock for all of us and a tragic loss. Ekon was employed here for about nine months; he left in early February to pursue his college studies. He was a delightful person, quick to smile, and a part of the fabric of Second Chance and our mission. He will be missed.’
As of now, Baltimore police have not shared any updates regarding the investigation. The Accident Investigation Unit is actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact AIU investigators at 410-396-2606.
