GREER, S.C. — Authorities are investigating the deaths of three members of the Samarel family found in their Greer home on March 28. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 54-year-old Richard Samarel, his 45-year-old wife Lina Maria Samarel, and their 9-year-old daughter, Samantha Samarel.

Emergency responders were alerted to the residence by a concerned neighbor who reported an incident, according to local news source FOX Carolina. Initial reports stated that an unnatural silence surrounds the deaths, creating confusion and concern in the community.

“The nature of the deaths is curious to many of us in the neighborhood,” a neighbor commented on the condition of anonymity. “Police were gone by 5:00 p.m., and family was in and at the house that evening.”

The coroner’s office confirmed the identities of the victims but has not released any details regarding the cause or manner of death. Officials stated the couple’s two other children were at school at the time of the incident.

“At this initial stage, this agency doesn’t feel like there is any threat to the public,” a representative from the sheriff’s office said in a statement. The department urged compassion in media coverage of the tragedy and promised to provide further information in a timely manner.

A press release indicated that deputies encountered a “language barrier” upon arrival at the Samarel home. Once resolved, they located the deceased individuals inside the residence.

Rick Samarel was a former manager at Bloomberg LP, while Lina Samarel was a therapist and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner with experience in outpatient psychiatry, including work with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Neighbors described the family as generally pleasant, noting that Lina was often seen as the primary caregiver who rarely left the house. “Families around here with children have a very good impression of the family,” said a neighbor, adding that Lina was “a little less interactive.”

The couple’s joint obituary portrays Lina as a “beacon of light” whose kindness and beauty inspired those around her. The obituary celebrates her love for family, health, and beauty, remarking on her integrity and warmth that will be missed by all who knew her. Samantha, remembered for her kind spirit, is also highlighted in the obituary for her loving nature that touched many lives.

Rick’s obituary celebrated his passion for family outings and hobbies such as soccer and chess, emphasizing his popularity among friends and colleagues.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths continues, with both the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s department actively involved. Further statements are expected as new information becomes available.
