Fashion Debate Following Trailer Release for The Devil Wears Prada 2
NEW YORK, NY – The first trailer for “The Devil Wears Prada 2” dropped on November 12, 2025, and it has sparked a heated fashion debate online. The sequel, set to release on May 1, 2026, features Anne Hathaway reprising her role as Andy Sachs and Meryl Streep as the formidable Miranda Priestly.
The trailer opens with a close-up of Priestly’s red-studded Valentino Rockstud stilettos, a style that gained popularity in the early 2010s. Many fans expressed their disbelief that a character so entrenched in fashion would choose a shoe considered out of date. Comments on the Who What Wear Instagram account included remarks like, “Giving rockstuds that much airtime was a … choice” and simply “no to shoes.”
TikTok user Lillie Rohan described the choice as a “diabolical move” for Miranda to wear something considered passé in 2025. “We’re so used to Miranda being this chic, sophisticated woman, and suddenly she’s in heels that should have been retired after the 2013 clubbing era,” Rohan said. The trailer has amassed over 3.5 million views on YouTube since its release.
However, not everyone is criticizing the shoe choice. TikTok user Joshua Chenault defended the decision, arguing that Priestly sets trends rather than follows them. He stated, “Why would she not be wearing a shoe that no one else is thinking of right now? Like, why would Miranda Priestly be following a crowd?”
Fashion historian Robert Ossant emphasized that the Rockstud shoe represents Priestly’s “allegiance to enduring style,” adding that the shoe is a modern classic by Valentino. He believes that anything worn by Priestly will spark conversations about fashion trends in the future.
Julia Hobbs, a senior contributing fashion features editor at Vogue, remarked on the nostalgic value of the Rockstuds. “In my mind, there’s something deeply nostalgic about them,” she said, suggesting that these vintage shoes could signify a trend revival.
Notably, the film’s return comes at a time when the fashion world is keenly observed by audiences, with many hoping for more than just a nostalgic trip back to the original. The success of the first film in 2006, which grossed over $326 million, sets a high bar for its sequel.
As discussions continue around the shoe choice and the trailer’s aesthetics, the anticipation builds. With the fashion world constantly evolving, the conversation around the sequel reflects larger cultural debates about style and what is in vogue.
