COLUMBIA, S.C. — One person was killed early Sunday morning in a car accident in South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Authorities reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree on Highway 501. Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after and pronounced the individual dead.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim as they work to notify family members. An investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information on the crash to contact the Highway Patrol.

In a related matter, Horry County officials are reminding residents that a burn ban is still in effect. The ban aims to prevent wildfires during the dry season, and violators may face penalties. Local officials have emphasized the importance of adhering to the ban to protect the community from potential dangers.

“We will not hesitate to take action against those who ignore this ban,” said Horry County Fire Chief Joseph B. Hucks. “Public safety is our top priority.”

This reminder follows Governor Henry McMaster‘s announcement on Friday, March 7, that South Carolina has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support firefighting efforts. The state has been battling a significant wildfire affecting over 2,000 acres in the Carolina Forest area, which has strained local firefighting resources.

Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette visited affected neighborhoods on Saturday to engage with residents and first responders. “We are here to support our firefighters and community during this challenging time,” Evette stated. “Together, we can work towards keeping our state safe.”

The forecast for the coming days suggests a mix of weather, with rain anticipated on Monday. After a period of dry conditions, residents are encouraged to prepare for wet weather and monitor local advisories.

As investigations continue into the tragic car crash and the ongoing wildfire situation, community leaders urge residents to stay informed and follow safety recommendations.
