Fatal Plane Crash Near Fort Smith Leaves Community In Shock

The small community of Fort Smith, N.W.T., is in shock following a fatal plane crash that occurred near the town. The chief coroner, Garth Eggenberger, confirmed that the crash resulted in multiple fatalities, though the exact number is yet to be determined. His team will assess the crash site on Wednesday morning.

The missing aircraft, which was carrying Diavik diamond mine workers, was located approximately 500 meters from the end of the Fort Smith Regional Airport’s runway. Rio Tinto, the company that operates the Diavik mine, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event and offered support to those affected.

Upon receiving news of the crash, Fort Smith’s health centre initiated a mass casualties response protocol. The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority stated that the protocol would remain in place until the incident response concludes. Regular appointments may be rescheduled to allocate resources for crash response.

Fort Smith Deputy Mayor Dianna Korol expressed the community’s devastation and emphasized the close-knit nature of the town. The local Anglican church held a prayer service to support those affected.

Premier R.J. Simpson extended his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, acknowledging the impact across the territory. Mental health and wellness supports have been made available to assist those in need.

The Transportation Safety Board is deploying investigators to the crash site to gather information and assess the incident. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), RCMP, and Canadian Rangers were all involved in the search and rescue operation.

The Town of Fort Smith issued a notice advising residents to stay away from the area to allow emergency response crews to work. Fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances were observed at the airport.
