Father Arrested After Leaving Kids Alone at McDonald’s Amid Job Hunt

Augusta, Georgia – A father is facing charges of deprivation of a minor after leaving his three children unattended at a McDonald's while he claimed to pursue a job opportunity. Chris Louis, 24, was charged on March 22 after being spotted by patrons who noticed the unaccompanied children.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff‘s Office, the children, aged 1, 6, and 10, were left alone at the fast-food restaurant for approximately an hour and a half. Louis initially told police he had left to attend a job interview nearby after applying earlier that day at the West Bank Inn.
However, police found discrepancies in Louis’s account. An employee at the West Bank Inn confirmed that while Louis did fill out an application at around 1:30 p.m., he was not expecting any follow-up call for an interview. Surveillance footage confirmed he left the hotel shortly after his application was submitted but was not seen near the McDonald’s around the time he left his children, before returning later.
Witnesses reported seeing Louis on the phone around 4:30 p.m. and heard him mention needing to drop something off before departing again and leaving the children unsupervised. The 10-year-old child supported this version of events, stating that her father often left them alone.
The children’s mother, Lissette Pichardo, was alerted by her daughter via social media and arrived at the McDonald’s shortly after 6 p.m. She had been informed that Louis intended to deliver a backpack to her and needed to take the children with him.
Pichardo called Louis, who claimed he was at the apartments looking for her but had lost his ID and other important cards. Upon arriving back at the restaurant shortly after 6 p.m., he was taken into custody while still carrying the backpack.
Captain Danny Whitehead of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that regarding Louis’s timeline and actions, the charge of deprivation of a minor was appropriate to ascertain the welfare of the children. “It was determined through the investigation that he was not attending a job interview during the time the children were left unattended,” Whitehead stated.
The incident has gained significant media attention and sparked a national debate about the challenges faced by low-income families. Support for Louis has poured in, notably from former NFL player Antonio Brown, who set up a GoFundMe that raised over $75,000 within 24 hours to assist the family. Brown reached out to Louis’s girlfriend for further details following widespread news of the arrest.
Responses to Louis’s situation have varied, with many expressing sympathy for his struggle to provide for his family while others agreeing with the sheriff’s office stance on child safety and welfare. As this case unfolds, it has ignited conversations about poverty, parenting, and community support.
