FBI Investigates Death of Florida Teen on Carnival Cruise Ship
PORT MIAMI, Florida — The FBI is investigating the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner, who was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship on November 8. Authorities revealed that Kepner died from asphyxiation caused by a bar hold, which involves an arm placed across the neck, according to a source briefed on the investigation.
The investigation has also uncovered two bruises on the side of her neck. Preliminary findings indicate there were no signs of sexual assault and that drugs or alcohol were not present in her system. Autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.
Kepner, a high school cheerleader from Titusville, Florida, was discovered by a housekeeper wrapped in a blanket and covered with life vests under a bed in her stateroom. She was on a Caribbean cruise with her father, stepmother, and stepsiblings when she went missing.
The family has been involved in a separate custody battle, and a court filing indicated that one of Kepner’s stepsiblings may face charges related to her death. Shauntel Hudson, Kepner’s stepmother, requested a delay in her custody hearing, stating that one of her minor children might be implicated in a criminal case arising from Kepner’s death.
No one has been publicly named as a suspect or person of interest in the case, and no criminal charges have been filed to date. Carnival Cruise Line has stated they are cooperating with the ongoing FBI investigation.
Kepner’s family has spoken out, wanting her to be remembered for her charitable spirit. They described her as a devoted daughter and a bright light in their lives, saying she planned to join the U.S. Navy after graduation.
