FBI Investigates Surge in Swatting Incidents Targeting Conservative Figures

WASHINGTON, D.C. — FBI Director Kash Patel announced Friday that the agency is investigating a rise in swatting incidents targeting conservative media figures, which has raised alarms about political discourse in the United States. This announcement comes amid recent reports of several prominent influencers being swatted, where emergency services are summoned to a location based on false claims.
“I want to address the alarming rise in ‘swatting’ incidents targeting media figures,” Patel stated on social media. “The FBI is aware of this dangerous trend, and my team and I are already taking action to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.” He emphasized, “This isn’t about politics—weaponizing law enforcement against ANY American is not only morally reprehensible but also endangers lives, including those of our officers.”
Swatting involves falsely reporting a serious incident, prompting law enforcement to respond with heightened force. Such acts have led to tragic outcomes in the past, sparking widespread concern regarding their implications. Conservative podcaster Nick Sortor recently reported both his father and sister had been victims of a swatting incident, where police were misled about threats to their lives.
“A dozen cops attempted to kick my dad’s door in at gunpoint,” Sortor shared, expressing outrage over the incident, which he described as “literal terrorism,” further demanding that the FBI treat it as such. The caller had falsely claimed Sortor’s father was threatening to kill his entire family.
Shawn Farash, another conservative figure, also detailed a swatting incident that occurred Thursday night, assuring his followers of their safety while pledging to investigate those behind the attacks. “We are going to do whatever is necessary to find out who is behind these coordinated attacks and hold them accountable to the fullest extent,” Farash stated.
This recent wave of swatting incidents has led to serious discussions among lawmakers about introducing legislation to combat the trend. In January, a bipartisan bill was introduced in Congress aiming to impose strict penalties on individuals who initiate swatting calls. If signed into law, those found guilty could face up to 20 years in prison if the incident results in serious injury or death.
Representative Mike Ezell, R-Miss., who supported the bill, remarked, “Having spent over 40 years in law enforcement, I’ve seen firsthand how swatting is a reckless and dangerous action that not only puts innocent lives at risk but wastes critical resources.” He called the legislation a significant step towards protecting communities from the harm of false alerts.
Supporting the urgency of the issue, Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, added his support for the bill while expressing concern over the increase in swatting incidents. “This is an extremely dangerous form of political terrorism. It’s liable to get somebody killed, and it must end now,” Gill asserted.
The FBI’s investigation emphasizes the seriousness of this issue as no arrests have been reported for the recent incidents targeting conservative figures. The agency has vowed to provide additional updates as the investigation unfolds.
As the discourse surrounding political beliefs grows more intense, the repercussions of swatting incidents are evident, prompting calls for stronger legal responses to deter future occurrences. Senator Mike Lee of Utah raised the question of whether such acts should be classified as attempted murder, highlighting the potential dangers inherent in these situations.
In a statement of solidarity, left-wing commentator Brian Krassenstein remarked on the grave nature of swatting incidents, stating, “Swatting is dangerous, reckless, and could get someone killed,” further stressing that these actions transcend political boundaries.
As investigations continue, reports of swatting incidents are likely to remain under scrutiny as lawmakers and law enforcement agencies look to thwart this alarming trend.
