WASHINGTON — James E. Dennehy, the head of the FBI‘s New York Field Office, was compelled to retire on Monday, one month after he encouraged staff to “dig in” amidst political pressures following the Trump administration’s removal of senior FBI leaders. Sources familiar with the situation informed NBC News about the circumstances surrounding Dennehy’s forced exit.

In an email sent to his staff on Monday, Dennehy disclosed that he was instructed to submit his retirement papers that same day. “I was not given a reason for this decision,” he wrote, indicating the abruptness of the action. Sources close to Dennehy revealed he was essentially given the option to resign or face termination.

Dennehy, a former Marine and respected leader within the bureau, addressed the ongoing turmoil within the FBI following a directive from the Trump Justice Department that requested the names of FBI agents involved in the investigations of the January 6 Capitol riots. In a prior communication to staff, Dennehy expressed concern about the integrity of the agency, stating, “Today, we find ourselves in the middle of a battle of our own as good people are being walked out of the FBI.”

His comments underscored the tension within the bureau as it grapples with the political implications of its investigations. Following the ousting of eight senior FBI officials shortly after Trump appointee Kash Patel‘s testimony, Dennehy and his leadership were perceived to be resisting directives that could have led to mass firings of agents involved in the Capitol cases.

In his farewell email, Dennehy called on his colleagues to remain vigilant against political interference. He reflected on a history of reforms within the FBI designed to protect its independence from political pressures. “As I leave today, I have an immense feeling of pride… who will always remain independent,” he emphasized.

Dennehy joined the FBI in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and previously specialized in counter-proliferation. His career included management roles across various field offices, culminating in his leadership of the New York branch in 2022.

His departure comes at a time of unease within the agency, now helmed by appointees aligned with the Trump administration, which further complicates the FBI’s relationship with its longstanding political independence.

As agents express concerns over their jobs and the potential impact of political upheaval, Dennehy’s removal could exacerbate existing worries about the integrity and independence of the bureau. However, his closing remarks to staff reflected a commitment to uphold the values of the FBI even amidst mounting challenges.
