The Federal Government has announced Wednesday, May 1, 2024, as a public holiday in honor of Workers’ Day Celebration, signifying a day dedicated to celebrating the labor force in the country. The declaration was made through a press statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, highlighting the importance of recognizing the efforts of workers across various sectors.

In the statement, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, echoed the administration’s commitment to upholding values of excellence, efficiency, and fairness within the labor force. Emphasizing President Bola Tinubu‘s dedication to promoting innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces as key drivers of national development.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the theme for this year’s celebration, focusing on ensuring safety and health at work in the face of a changing climate. The Federal Government’s stance remains centered on prioritizing the well-being of citizens and providing a conducive environment for optimal work performance.

The upcoming Workers’ Day Celebration holds added significance as expectations rise around the unveiling of a proposed new minimum wage by President Bola Tinubu on that day. Anticipation is high as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has laid out seven demands from the Federal Government ahead of the celebration, including the implementation of a new minimum wage and the establishment of state and local government police forces to tackle insecurity.

Furthermore, the NLC advocates for uniform adoption of the new minimum wage across all sectors, urging states, local governments, and the organized private sector to comply when the new wage structure is ratified. The nationwide focus on labor rights and welfare underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance working conditions and support national development.
