Luigi Mangione Court Appearance February 2025

NEW YORK CITY — U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Tuesday that federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a shocking December shooting in Manhattan.

In a statement, Bondi described Thompson’s death as a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America.” The shooting occurred on December 4, 2024, as Thompson approached the New York Hilton Midtown for an annual investors’ conference. He was shot from behind on the sidewalk, prompting a extensive manhunt for his assailant.

According to Bondi, the decision to seek the death penalty aligns with the Trump administration’s agenda to combat violent crime and enhance public safety. “After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case,” she said.

Bondi’s office indicated that the murder represented not just a personal crime, but an act of political violence. “Mangione’s actions involved substantial planning and premeditation, and the murder took place in public with bystanders nearby, posing a grave risk of death to additional persons,” a Justice Department statement read.

Mangione, 26, faces multiple charges in connection with the incident, including federal counts of murder, stalking, and firearms violations, as well as state charges including first-degree murder during the course of terrorism. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The investigation culminated in Mangione’s arrest on December 9 after he was recognized at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Authorities noted that Mangione fled the scene of the crime on a bicycle, leading to a frantic pursuit that captivated the nation.

Mangione’s defense team has yet to comment on the Attorney General’s decision to pursue the death penalty. His next court appearance is expected to further clarify his legal strategy against both state and federal charges.

Bondi’s announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny over violent crimes targeting public figures and the response by law enforcement agencies. While details surrounding the case continue to develop, Thompson is remembered as a dedicated leader and family man, leaving behind two young children.
