San Francisco, California — Roger Federer, Swiss tennis legend and co-founder of the Laver Cup, made a memorable appearance at Thrive City outside Chase Center on September 20, 2025. He joined former professional player Andy Roddick for a live episode of Roddick’s podcast, ‘Served.’

Fans greeted Federer with overwhelming enthusiasm, underscoring his immense popularity even after his retirement. During the podcast, he reflected on his ongoing love for tennis and how he maintains his connection through the Laver Cup. ‘After retiring from tennis you can do a podcast, coach or commentate, but I wanted something that tied the history of the game to the present,’ Federer said.

Federer highlighted the importance of preserving tennis legends’ legacy. He expressed his sadness about how often these heroes are forgotten, stating, ‘In tennis, we forget the legends of our sport.’ For him, the Laver Cup serves as a way to bridge generations, featuring not just recent stars but also iconic players like Andre Agassi.

As they conversed, Federer emphasized the need for variety in court surfaces to ensure players can demonstrate their skills effectively. ‘Now everybody plays similar,’ he lamented. ‘It becomes every week is basically the same way.’ This came after Roddick raised concerns about the tournament’s slow court surfaces.

The podcast session drew laughter when Federer made light of his own need to stay conditioned, teasing Roddick about his appearance at a gala without a tie. After the discussion, Federer remained for some time to sign autographs, delighting the crowd with chants of ‘Roger, Roger, Roger.’

In other event highlights, NBA star Steph Curry joined Federer for a coin toss, adding to the event’s star power. Curry and Federer exchanged gifts after the toss, further blending sports and celebrity.

Meanwhile, San Francisco’s mayor Daniel Lurie participated in the Laver Cup Serve Challenge, showcasing enthusiasm and skill as he tried his luck on the court.

As Federer concluded his time in the Fan Zone, excitement remained high among fans and players alike. ‘I didn’t want to be alone on the court when I retired,’ he remarked, sharing the desire to inspire future tennis stars and fans.
