U.s. Mexico Border Military Installation

Santa Fe, New Mexico – The U.S. Attorney for New Mexico announced that 82 charges have been filed for unauthorized entry along the U.S.-Mexico border in New Mexico. U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison stated the action coincided with a recent visit from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks.

Ellison emphasized, “The Department of Justice will work hand in glove with the Department of Defense and Border Patrol to gain 100% operational control of New Mexico’s 170-mile border with Mexico.” He added that those who trespass into designated National Defense Areas will face federal prosecution without exception.

The charges fall under Title 50 and could lead to one year in prison, in addition to any immigration-related offenses. This initiative is part of President Donald Trump’s broader effort to tighten border security and deter unauthorized crossings.

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico expressed serious concerns about these new border regulations. They stated, “These prosecutions raise serious concerns, threatening civil liberties for everyone in border communities regardless of citizenship status.” The group indicated they would monitor developments closely.

When Trump designated the strip of land along the U.S.-Mexico border as a military installation, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office reported they were not consulted and would not support the initiative.

As the situation evolves, the community remains divided on the implications of increased military presence and border enforcement.
