Festival Chaos: Driver Arrested After Breaching Barriers in Laurel

Laurel, Maryland — A 28-year-old woman was arrested Saturday after she drove into a crowd at the Main Street Festival, just hours after a propane explosion disrupted the event. According to Laurel Police, Kai Deberry-Bostick drove her car through barriers and onto a closed street where festival-goers were gathered.
Police released video footage showing Deberry-Bostick as she struggled with barriers before accelerating into the crowd. A police officer attempted to prevent her from entering the festival, shouting, “Stop! Stop your car!” as she drove past.
The chaos unfolded after a propane explosion injured one person earlier in the day, prompting the cancellation of the festival’s parade. Laurel Mayor Keith R. Sydnor confirmed the explosion occurred while vendors were setting up, and the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“This is a festival that’s been going on for 44 years. Unfortunately, this accident happened, but we’re glad everyone is safe,” Sydnor stated during a news conference.
Thanks to the swift actions of police, no festival-goers were harmed, although one officer sustained minor injuries after being struck by Deberry-Bostick’s vehicle. The police have not released further details regarding the charges against Deberry-Bostick.
The Main Street Festival annually attracts thousands, featuring various food vendors, arts, crafts, and a parade. Local officials expressed disappointment over the incidents that marred this year’s celebration. Laurel Police have not responded to additional inquiries regarding the ongoing investigation.
