Festivus: The Quirky Holiday Celebrating Simplicity and Airting Grievances
Festivus, celebrated on December 23, is a secular holiday that has gained popularity as an alternative to the commercialized Christmas season. Originating from the popular American television show ‘Seinfeld,’ Festivus was first introduced in the 1997 episode “The Strike.”
The holiday is known for its unique and humorous traditions. One of the most notable customs is the “Airing of Grievances,” where participants gather around the dinner table to tell each other about all the ways they have disappointed them over the past year. Another tradition is the “Feats of Strength,” where the head of the household challenges someone to a wrestling match, which continues until the challenger is pinned to the floor.
Festivus also includes the setting up of an unadorned aluminum pole, which is a deliberate contrast to the decorated Christmas trees. The simplicity of the aluminum pole is a key aspect of the holiday, reflecting its anti-commercial ethos.
Beyond its origins in popular culture, Festivus has inspired various events and competitions. For example, the Festivus Games, which have been running since 2011, are a series of fitness competitions designed for the “rest of us” – athletes who are not elite-level competitors. These games aim to make fitness accessible and fun for a broader range of participants.
