Finance Minister Clarifies Remarks on EY Employee’s Death Amid Criticism
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has responded to widespread criticism regarding her comments on the death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old chartered accountant working for Ernst & Young (EY). Perayil allegedly succumbed to work pressure, sparking a debate over workplace stress and mental health.
Sitharaman, in a post on a social media platform, clarified that her remarks on inner strength and spirituality were in the context of a university event where a new Meditation Hall and a place of worship had been inaugurated. “The University set up a Meditation Hall and a place of worship for all its students and faculty. It is in this context that I spoke on how it is necessary to build inner strength for students,” she explained. The minister emphasized that her intention was not to “victim shame” but to underscore the importance of institutional and familial support.
The minister’s earlier statements, which included advice to “believe in God” and “grow inner strength,” drew strong reactions from opposition leaders and social media users, who accused her of insensitivity. Congress leader K C Venugopal criticized the ruling regime, stating, “The ruling regime and the finance minister can only see the pain of corporate giants, not the pain of the hardworking young generation.” He highlighted the exploitation of fresh graduates in demanding work conditions.
Furthermore, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stated that Anna Sebastian had the “inner strength” to pursue her Chartered Accountancy degree, and it was the “toxic work culture” and “long work hours” that needed addressing.
The Union Labour Ministry has announced a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the employee’s death, focusing on the work environment at EY and its potential role in the tragedy. This follows appeals for improved working conditions and greater emphasis on employee well-being in certain professional sectors.
