Fireworks Display in Himalayas Draws Environmental and Cultural Criticism

Xigaze, Xizang Autonomous Region, China — A fireworks show staged by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang in the Himalayas on September 20, 2025, has sparked significant backlash over environmental and cultural concerns. The event, co-organized with outdoor brand Arc’teryx, was intended to showcase eco-friendly fireworks but has raised questions about the impact on the fragile ecosystem.
Despite prior assurances that the fireworks would not harm the environment, many netizens expressed outrage, calling the display absurd. Concerns were amplified by allegations that the biodegradable materials used were still not without consequences, as the local ecosystem is extremely sensitive. Critics on social media stated that destroying wildlife resources or disturbing natural habitats should not be taken lightly.
Cai ignited three sequences of fireworks in Gyangze, a region at an altitude of about 5,500 meters, creating visual displays signifying the Eastern dragon culture. Organizers claimed that livestock would be relocated and residual materials cleaned up immediately after the event. Nevertheless, the ongoing backlash has pushed both Cai and Arc’teryx to delete promotional videos and reconsider their public relations strategies.
Critics further highlighted the sacred nature of the local culture, which includes respect for mountain deities and beliefs against loud explosions. They warned that the sound pollution caused by the fireworks could destabilize glaciers already affected by climate change, posing risks to wildlife in the area.
In response to the uproar, Arc’teryx and Cai issued apologies and commitments for further investigation. Arc’teryx acknowledged public concerns regarding the ecology of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and vowed to invite third-party environmental organizations for further evaluation of the incident. Their statement emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability.
Cai also expressed remorse, stating he understood the gravity of the situation and pledged to cooperate fully with any ecological assessments. Both brands aim to support restoration efforts if environmental impacts are confirmed.
An official from the Ecology and Environment Bureau stated that all procedures had been followed and no damage had been reported thus far. The incident will be monitored closely moving forward.
