First Day Of Winter 2024 Calendar

The first day of winter for the year 2024 is set to occur on Saturday, December 21, 2024. This marks the beginning of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, which will last until Thursday, March 20, 2025.

As the winter season approaches, meteorologists are predicting a shift from the strong El Nino conditions of the previous season to a weak La Nina. This change is expected to influence weather patterns across the United States, particularly in regions like Mid-Michigan. During La Nina, the Polar jet stream tends to be wavier and more active, leading to colder outbreaks and increased chances for rain and snow in areas such as the Great Lakes.

Despite the anticipated colder conditions, the overall winter outlook suggests a relatively mild and wetter season. Average snowfall is projected to be around 39.5 inches, with average temperatures expected to be around 25.5 degrees. The Great Lakes region is likely to be one of the most active areas this winter, with lake-effect snow contributing to above-average snowfall.

The warmest sections of the country, including parts of Michigan, are expected to be in the south and east. This winter’s data, to be reviewed by March 1st, is anticipated to show near or above normal snowfall and temperatures.
