Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, emphasized the need for urgent environmental regeneration at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, during her visit to the institution on Thursday. Mrs. Tinubu, reflecting on the campus’s past beauty, expressed concern over the significant erosion of its green landscapes over the years.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 2.7-kilometer ‘Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way‘, along with a grand pavilion and monument named in her honor, Mrs. Tinubu announced a substantial donation of one billion Naira towards the restoration of OAU’s horticultural landscape. She declared, “I will donate one billion Naira for the OAU horticultural landscape to be restored. The campus used to be beautiful during my time here, and we must bring back its beauty.”

The projects, which include the newly named road, were donated by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to honor the First Lady as part of his 50th birthday celebrations. The royal father praised Mrs. Tinubu for her contributions to education, women’s empowerment, and national unity. “A golden statue is erected to immortalize her virtuous person and to showcase her strength as a teacher, mother, and wife,” Oba Ogunwusi remarked.

In his remarks, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Deputy Kola Adewusi, reiterated his administration’s commitment to upgrading infrastructural facilities across the state.

During the same visit, Mrs. Tinubu addressed the ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, denying that her husband, President Bola Tinubu, is responsible for the current hardships. Since the removal of the fuel subsidy earlier in Tinubu’s administration, the price of petrol has soared. Addressing the concerns, Mrs. Tinubu noted, “We are 18 months into our administration; we are not the cause of the current situation; we are working to fix it and secure the future.”

She assured the public that efforts are underway to build a promising future for Nigeria, expressing confidence that the nation would reach “the promised land” with divine assistance. The First Lady also reflected on her degree from OAU 41 years ago, underlining the importance of education and the necessity of continued investment in institutions of learning.
