First 7 PM Sunset of 2025 Arrives in New York City

NEW YORK – New Yorkers will enjoy an extra hour of evening light this week, as the sun sets at 7 p.m. for the first time in 2025 on Wednesday, March 12.
The upcoming midweek milestone will provide more daylight for after-work activities such as strolls, dinner dates, or simply enjoying the golden hour’s glow. According to the National Weather Service, Monday’s sunset will happen at 6:57 p.m. and Tuesday’s at 6:59 p.m., leading into Wednesday’s official 7 p.m. sunset.
This shift in daylight follows shortly after the recent transition to daylight saving time, which encourages longer evenings. The city will experience its first 8 p.m. sunset in early May, marking further progression into the spring season.
While the longer days arrive, warmer temperatures are not expected immediately. Highs will reach the low 60s at the start of the week, dropping to a high of 52 degrees on Wednesday under partly sunny skies. This trend of lowering temperatures will continue into Thursday, where highs are expected to top out at 50 degrees before a warming trend returns by the weekend.
“It’s wonderful to see longer days, but we have to be patient for spring temperatures,” said a meteorologist from the National Weather Service.
Spring officially begins on March 20, only ten days away, bringing anticipation for warmer weather into the minds of many New Yorkers.
