Flash Flood Warning Issued for Parts of Western New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of western New York, effective until 10:30 PM EDT. The warning covers West Central Cattaraugus County and Southeastern Chautauqua County as thunderstorms continue to produce heavy rain, with flash flooding either ongoing or expected to start shortly.
At 6:19 PM EDT, radar data indicated significant storm activity across the warned region. The primary threat is rapid flash flooding caused by the intense rainfall from the thunderstorms, which can lead to dangerous conditions on roadways and other low-lying areas.
The affected locations include Jamestown, Lakewood, Falconer, and other nearby towns such as Busti, Gerry, Conewango, and Ellington. Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant as flooding can severely impact small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, and underpasses.
“Flash flooding is occurring or could begin imminently,” the Weather Service reported. They advise residents to avoid flooded roads and recognize that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. It is crucial for individuals to be aware of their surroundings, particularly near streams and creeks, which can become life-threatening in heavy rainfall.
In addition to the flash flood warning, those involved in outdoor activities such as camping or hiking are strongly cautioned to steer clear of streams or creeks that could overflow.
