Heavy Rain Flash Flood Warnings Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood warning for several counties in south-central Pennsylvania, including Adams, Cumberland, and Franklin. The warning will remain in effect until 12:45 a.m. Tuesday due to heavy thunderstorms expected to produce significant rainfall.

At 9:38 p.m. on May 5, Doppler radar detected thunderstorms that had already dropped between 1 and 2 inches of rain in the warned area. The NWS cautioned that additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches could follow, leading to ongoing flash flooding.

Residents in affected areas, including Waynesboro, Shippensburg, and Fayetteville, are urged to take precautions. The NWS highlighted that flash flooding can rapidly develop, often catching people off guard, particularly at night when visibility is reduced. “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the NWS warned.

The flash flood conditions can severely affect urban areas, highways, and small streams. Locations prone to flooding include underpasses and low-lying areas where water can accumulate quickly. The NWS emphasizes the danger of driving through flooded roadways, as most flood-related fatalities involve vehicles.

In other regions, including parts of New York, similar flash flood warnings are in effect. For instance, a warning for Southwest Steuben County, NY, indicated a notable gap between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain had already fallen by 7:13 p.m., causing flash flooding.

Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to follow these safety tips: steer clear of floodwaters, avoid park areas near drainage ditches during heavy rainfall, and remain informed about local weather conditions.

The NWS advises anyone in flood-prone areas to seek higher ground if a flash flood occurs and to adhere to evacuation orders from local authorities when issued. Reporting flooded areas to emergency services can also aid in monitoring and aid efforts.
