San Diego International Airport Flight Delays Fog

SAN DIEGO — San Diego International Airport experienced significant flight disruptions Friday morning, marking the third consecutive day of delays due to low visibility caused by dense fog.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground delay at the airport early Friday, which is expected to last from 8:31 a.m. to 1:59 p.m. Earlier in the morning, the agency had implemented a ground stop as well.

Dense fog along the coastline limited visibility, affecting travel plans for numerous passengers. As of 7:15 a.m. Friday, a total of 119 flights were reported delayed, with eight cancellations attributed to the weather conditions.

Southwest Airlines recorded the highest number of delays, although multiple airlines were impacted. The National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory for the entire San Diego coast, warning of visibility dropping below a quarter mile at times until 9 a.m. Friday.

The Department of Transportation emphasizes that airlines are mandated to provide timely updates to passengers regarding flight status changes. For flights scheduled to depart within seven days, airlines are obligated to report changes within 30 minutes of being informed.

Information on flight status must be accessible on each airline’s website and via their telephone reservation systems. Travelers can check the San Diego International Airport’s official page for real-time flight status updates or utilize tracking tools to monitor delays or cancellations.

The Department of Transportation also maintains a dashboard detailing services that airlines provide to assist travelers during cancellations or delays attributable to the airline’s control. A green check mark on this dashboard indicates a commitment to offering certain services, while a red “X” signifies that such commitments are not guaranteed and may depend on the airline’s discretion.

Additionally, passengers who purchased tickets via credit cards may have access to protections such as trip delay travel insurance, offered by various banks including Chase Bank and American Express. Travelers are encouraged to check with their credit card providers for details on available protections.
