G Flip Breaks Records with Multiple Hottest 100 Appearances
We previously mentioned that this year was witnessing some incredible record-breaking feats, and now we have further proof. G Flip, the talented multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne, has shattered the record for the most number of songs to appear in a single year by one artist in the Hottest 100 countdown.
Between the uplifting track ‘7 Days’ at #80 and the heart-rending ‘The Worst Person Alive’ at #2, G Flip’s album DRUMMER has claimed a remarkable seven spots on the list, eclipsing the previous record held by Wolfmother since 2005 during the ‘Joker and the Thief’ era.
In 2022, Spacey Jane achieved the same feat and matched the record set by Wolfmother. However, both bands now find themselves overshadowed by G Flip’s impressive accomplishment, and the Melbourne artist is clearly making a significant mark on the Hottest 100’s record books.
Not only has G Flip broken the record for most appearances in a single year, but they have also stormed into third place for the most entries of all time in the Hottest 100. With these seven songs, they have accumulated a total of 19 entries, surpassing Spacey Jane and Billie Eilish and coming close to the record held by Hilltop Hoods.
G Flip’s success in the Hottest 100 reflects their thriving career in the 2020s. This year alone, they secured a range of placements from #26 to #22 before finishing with an impressive podium finish at #2. G Flip first made their mark in the Hottest 100 back in 2018 with their songs ‘Killing My Time’ (#62) and ‘About You’ (#38). Since then, they have featured in every countdown, with multiple tracks in 2019, 2020, and 2022, and a single entry in 2021. They have also collaborated with other artists such as Baker Boy and Illy.
G Flip’s ‘Cruel Summer’ performance in Like A Version also garnered significant attention, earning them the 22nd spot in the Like A Version Hottest 100 in 2023. Their impact on our lives, playlists, and ears cannot be denied.
G Flip made waves in 2018 when they uploaded their debut solo track ‘About You’ on Triple J’s Unearthed platform on Valentine's Day. The song immediately resonated with music lovers across the globe, with over 15,000 people visiting their Unearthed page in the first week, including listeners from 73 different countries. The accompanying DIY video garnered more than 120,000 views and quickly became a feature on playlists such as ‘New Music This Week’.
Looking ahead to 2024, G Flip shows no signs of slowing down. Apart from their impressive Hottest 100 success, they have recently delivered a powerful performance of ‘Cruel Summer’ that has captured the internet’s attention. Currently in London, they have sold-out shows lined up and plans to perform at festivals such as Laneway and Great Southern Nights. They also have an extensive tour in the United States, culminating in an appearance at the Governors Ball in New York.
G Flip’s exceptional achievements have set a new standard in the music industry, and their determination and talent are evident. Congratulations to G Flip, a true non-binary legend who has clearly earned this outstanding feat.
