Flood Watch Issued as Heavy Rain Hits South-Central Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania — A flood watch is in effect for Franklin and Adams counties as heavy rain impacts South-Central Pennsylvania. The WGAL News 8 Storm Team has called it an Impact Night, indicating the weather may disrupt normal activities this evening.
Rain began to fall throughout the region Tuesday, with predictions of 1 to 2 inches, and local areas potentially receiving 2 to 4 inches. The National Weather Service warns that ground saturation from last week’s rainfall heightens flood risks. Conditions remain favorable for localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
As rain continues into Wednesday morning, officials urge residents in prone areas to prepare for possible emergency evacuations. The intensity of the rain prompted officials in Somerset County to declare a state of emergency, especially for residents living in low-lying regions.
“Heavy rains in our area could lead to considerable flooding,” said a spokesperson for the Somerset emergency management team. “We encourage residents to stay alert and follow evacuation orders if necessary.”
Forecasts predict sporadic showers to follow the heavy rain after Wednesday morning, with temperatures reaching highs in the upper 60s. Winds are expected to pick up later in the day.
Local school districts, including the Meyersdale Area and Salisbury-Elk Lick, have announced early dismissals due to the weather. Both districts remind students and staff to exercise caution when traveling during this period of heavy rain and possible flooding.
As the storm system continues to develop, additional rainfall is expected through the week, with the potential for showers and thunderstorms lingering through the weekend. Weather teams will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary.
