Lawton Oklahoma Flood Rescue Efforts

LAWTON, Okla. — A recent flooding incident in Lawton has claimed the life of one individual after they drove into standing water near 2nd Street and F Avenue. Lawton Police Department (LPD) officials confirmed that first responders observed the vehicle entering the water but could not reach it safely. The LPD Dive Team later assisted in the recovery of the victim.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, but family members have been informed. The LPD is urging residents to remain cautious while driving, especially in areas known for flooding, and to stay updated on road conditions.

In a related community response, the Lawton Community Theatre (LCT) is organizing a clean-up day on Sunday, April 27, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the John Denney Playhouse, located at 1316 NW Bell Ave. The theater is asking for volunteers to bring shop vacs or cleaning supplies to help address the impacts of flooding inside the venue.

The heavy rainfall on April 26 also led to significant flooding across Southwest Oklahoma, resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Lawton Fire Department (LFD) officials reported multiple water rescues throughout the day, advising the public to steer clear of low-lying areas and flooded roads.

Numerous road closures have occurred due to the flooding, including I-44 Westbound near exit 41. Video footage shared on social media highlights the extent of the flooding, showcasing vehicles stuck in water and several streets submerged.

This tragic event serves as a reminder for residents to prioritize safety in extreme weather conditions.
