Flooding Forces Rescue of 150 Students from Maryland Elementary School

WESTERNPORT, Md. — Floodwaters forced the evacuation of approximately 150 students and 50 adults from Westernport Elementary School on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, as heavy rains inundated the region, local officials reported.
Alley Wade was at work when she learned her sons’ school in Allegany County was flooding. Her frantic drive to the school ended when a police officer stopped her just blocks away. “It was very scary,” she recalled, describing her panic as she witnessed the rescue efforts.
As rescue boats evacuated children, she managed to see her oldest son, William, 10, being brought to safety. “I waved and called out to him,” she said. Eventually, both her sons, William and eight-year-old Quinton, were safely reunited with her at a nearby church.
According to Kati Kenney, a spokesperson for Allegany County’s emergency services, about 15 rescue boats were deployed as floodwaters reached the second floor of the school. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although people were trapped in homes and cars around the area.
Witnesses reported the first floor of the school was almost entirely submerged, and children were evacuated with their pants rolled up and shoes soaked. When together again, William was visibly upset, while Quinton lightened the mood by joking about his missed snack.
The flooding, exacerbated by several inches of rain, peaked in the Georges Creek region, reaching a measurement of 12.12 feet by 5 p.m. ET Tuesday. The site is known for severe flooding, with officials noting the last major flood occurred in 1996.
A flash flood emergency was declared for Westernport, Barton, and adjoining areas in West Virginia. Additional rainfall was expected, maintaining the rainy pattern in the Mid-Atlantic.
The Mayor of Westernport, Judy Hamilton, expressed her shock at the unexpected flooding, stating, “It just seemed to happen all at once. My heart is breaking.”
Emergency responders quickly mobilized to aid the evacuation efforts while Kingwood Mayor Kati Kenney emphasized their commitment to safety for those affected. “Water rescue teams from surrounding counties are actively assisting,” she said.
Though Alley Wade confirmed her home remained safe, she noted many families in downtown Westernport now face flood-damaged homes. Community and relief efforts are already underway to support those affected by the day’s events.
