Florida Drivers Targeted by SunPass Phishing Scam via Text
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida drivers are being warned about a new phishing scam targeting SunPass users. The scam involves fraudulent text messages claiming to be from SunPass, Florida’s electronic toll collection system, and urging recipients to pay unpaid tolls by Jan. 21, 2025, to avoid late fees and legal action.
The message reads: “Please pay your toll in Florida by January 21, 2025. In order to avoid excessive late fees and legal action on statements, please pay the tolls in time. Thank you for your cooperation and wish you a pleasant holiday.” The text includes a link prompting recipients to pay the supposed unpaid tolls, but officials warn that clicking the link could lead to stolen personal information or financial loss.
SunPass does not typically send unsolicited text messages demanding immediate payment. Drivers are advised to avoid clicking on any links in suspicious messages and instead verify their account status by logging in directly to the official SunPass website or contacting customer service.
If you receive such a message, forward it to your mobile carrier or email provider and consider reporting the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or Florida’s Attorney General. Scammers often create a sense of urgency, threaten legal action, and use deceptive links to exploit victims.
Authorities emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and double-checking the legitimacy of any communication requesting payment or personal details. By doing so, drivers can protect themselves from falling victim to this and other phishing scams.
