TAMPA, Fla. — On Family Day at the Florida State Fair, visitors expressed confidence in the event’s enhanced safety measures, marking a significant shift from its past reputation for unruly behavior among teens. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is set to showcase its latest security initiatives at the fairgrounds, reinforcing efforts to create a secure environment for families.
In recent years, the Florida State Fair has adopted stricter rules and security upgrades in response to previous incidents. A pivotal change significant to fair attendees requires individuals under 18 to be accompanied by an adult after 6 p.m., a policy aimed at curbing disruptive behavior.
“We’ve changed a lot of the program and how we layout the whole fairground,” said Cheryl Flood, CEO of the Florida State Fair. “It’s a much safer environment, and we want families to come out and really enjoy time with their family.”
Parents like Teshia Burke have noted a positive change in atmosphere at the event. “When I was younger, the fair was almost like a little scarier,” she said. “Now there’s a lot of protection walking around, and it seems a lot safer.”
Visitors exhibited similar sentiments. Tom Howell praised the ramped-up law enforcement presence, asserting, “It’s gotten better and better every year.” His wife, Kim Howell, also highlighted the presence of new measures such as bag checks and visible security at entrances, which were absent five years ago.
The heightened focus on safety is partly rooted in a tragic incident from the past. After being ejected from the fairgrounds during a disturbance, 17-year-old Joseph Joseph was struck and killed on nearby Interstate 4. His mother, Deanna Joseph, has reflected on her son’s legacy, stating, “Andrew influenced those changes so other children can be safe.”
In response to safety concerns, the HCSO has intensified its efforts, with deputies patrolling on foot, guarding elevated observation posts, and employing extensive surveillance systems. Daily security meetings are conducted to ensure that adjustments are made as necessary throughout the fair’s 12-day run.
“We want families to feel comfortable being here,” Flood emphasized, noting that with these measures in place, this year’s fair has not experienced any significant issues, allowing families to enjoy rides and entertainment in a secure setting.
Visitor Cartez Thomas succinctly summed up the atmosphere, saying, “It’s pretty family-friendly. It seems like everybody’s having a good time.”
