ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida State Senator Geraldine Thompson has passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by her family late Tuesday. According to the statement released by her family, Thompson died peacefully following complications from knee replacement surgery.

Thompson represented Florida Senate District 15, which encompasses parts of Northern Orange County. She was a prominent figure in the Florida Legislature and had a long history of public service. Thompson earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Miami in 1970 and a master’s degree from Florida State University in 1973.

Prior to her election to the Senate, Thompson taught for six years in the Orange County Public Schools. She also served as an administrator at Valencia Community College for 24 years. Thompson made history on November 6, 2018, when she was elected to represent Florida House District 44, becoming the first female Democrat and person of color to hold this position.
